People

Dear Epictetus,

People can make you sad and disappointed. But they can also give your great comfort and happiness. Let them make you stronger in your ability to handle tough situations well.

Sincerely,
Musonius

Each day

Dear Epictetus,

Each day I try not to take your presence for granted. Even when you test my patience I appreciate your energy and personality. Choose wisdom and understanding over anger and selfishness. You can go far in life if you think before you act.

Sincerely,
Musonius

Innocence

Dear Epictetus,

When we were playing guess-the-animal game, we took turns drawing an animal and the other person would guess what the animal is. We drew elephants, tigers, and alligators.

But then we started to run out of obvious animals to draw and had to reach for more obscure animals. When it was your turn to draw, you asked me how many legs a scorpion has. I said eight legs. You then showed me a drawing of an animal with 16 legs.

I said, "A scorpion!"

You said, "How did you know?"

I said, "Just a guess."

Sincerely,
Musonius

Bike ride

Dear Epictetus,

We went out for a bike ride today. I got you some lights for the front and back of your bike for your evening rides. Your helmet looks as cool as the one I got over 25 years ago. I am getting older and you are growing fast right before my eyes.

As we were airing out the hot car, I left the car engine on. I saw you left the water bottle on the dash board. I said you shouldn't leave it out in the sun like that. You said it was on the air conditioned vent. Good thinking.

Sincerely,
Musonius

Thinking vs Doing

Dear Epictetus,

If you have to choose between great thoughts/talks and doing good, choose doing good. There is a premium in action that great words and ideas cannot overtake.

Sincerely,
Musonius

Kindness

Dear Epictetus,

When deciding whether to be kind, the default position must always be to be kind. I have never regretted being kind to people but there were times when I felt I could have been kinder.

People seem to want meaning in life. So much meaning can be had when you do something nice for someone else without the expectation of repayment. Even if the gift isn't appreciated, your act of benevolence is something to be proud of on a personal level and a standard to aim for in a refined individual.

Be the creator of good and you might find yourself surrounded by the goodness you exude throughout the day, each and every day.

Sincerely,
Musonius

Teamwork

Dear Epictetus,

The idea of teamwork isn't only a warm and fuzzy concept but one based on hard reality. Without working with a team of people, it would be impossible to know the full picture and what people want or don't want. You aren't omniscient. But you can be closer to making the right decision when the right people are involved -- to get their support and ensuring things are actually implemented.

Sincerely,
Musonius

Happy Birthday, Epictetus

Dear Epictetus,

Today you turned six years old. Happy birthday! Today you also reminded me two important lessons: self control and to not say anything bad about anyone.

Self control is to think of something and actually doing it. It is the ideal realized. If I do this each day, who can stop me?

Not saying anything bad about anyone makes sense because I wouldn't want anyone to do the same to me. It also makes sense because I most likely wouldn't say anything bad in front of people. So it's dishonest. In addition, we are all here on earth for a very short time. There is no need to make worse our human condition. Unless they ask, it's best to not say anything and let people learn for themselves what to do.

It was a good day today.

Sincerely,
Musonius
